January principal message

Dear P.S. 307 Families and Friends:

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday.
I welcomed home my Freshman daughter this holiday. It is amazing how a couple of months away at college can transform one in such a positive way and it’s great to see your child want to take on the world by applying all that they have learned up until now, and with more to come. Speaking of opportunities and applied learning, we have a number of activities planned for January. Students in grades 3-5 will engage in authentic learning experiences as we host our 6 th year of S.E.M. (Schoolwide Enrichment Model) STEM Stations. Students will have a chance to collaborate with students and teachers across the grades in an activity directed towards a product or extending a service. Teachers are in the process of submitting their proposals right now, so we should be off and running soon. Thanks to Ms. Narine, this year’s CS4 All Instructor, who is responsible for organizing this event over a 10 week period.

Cookshop is indeed back! We tweaked the schedule a bit in order to bring Ms. Williams back into running the Family Cookshop component. She and Mr. Crosland, Parent Coordinator, will continue to work with parents cooking healthy, nutritional and delicious dishes once a month. Our students in Pre-K, Kindergarten and First grade will also learn to cook healthy dishes, while learning about nutrition. The children love it and it’s always a pleasure to see them sitting family style as they eat their own made healthy meals.

Our teachers continue to immerse themselves in grade team inquiry once a week. Upon looking at student work and data, each team determined a focus in order to lift the quality of student work and mastery. For example, grade 1 is focusing on engaging students to add more details in their pictures and writing. The goal is for students to elaborate. Teachers have a plan of action based on research and collaboration and they are monitoring the progress weekly, making adjustments as necessary.

On January 15th , we invite Class Parents and Families interested in being more involved to our monthly Class Parent Meeting at 8:15 a.m. Our last meeting was very informative and productive. Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who attended. Again, the goal is to have a class parent representative for each class.

The Lunar New Year celebration for Pre-K and K families is on February 4th . You definitely do not want to miss this beautiful event.

In past years, we have celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and our Beloved Community inJanuary. This year we are pushing this event to February 7th to also recognize African American History. Our theme this year is celebrating history through music and dance. Each grade will
present a different genre showing the many music and dance contributions by African Americans. We look forward to this special event in honor of Dr. King and the Beloved Community.

May 2019 be a year full of peace, health and happiness. As always, thank you for your continued support.
Stephanie Carroll
